AS FEATURED ON
Located in the heart of Colombo, Café Kumbuk is a space that promotes healthy and sustainable living.
Day-dreaming by a shady grove of Kumbuk trees in our magical island home of Sri Lanka, Café Kumbuk was a dream inspired by many years of living away from our motherland.
Roaming the bustling streets of East London, soaking up culture, meeting wonderful people and tantalizing the taste buds with world food, it was these experiences that spurred us to create our very own downtown café-space, perfectly positioned within Prana Lounge.

THE BIRTH OF CAFé KUMBUK
In August 2015, after having graduated from university in London with a degree in Creative Advertising, I moved back to Sri Lanka in an effort to realize my entrepreneurial dream. In March 2016, together with the help of my mum Dinali – we were able to make the Café Kumbuk concept a reality.
Kumbuk is the name of a tree commonly found in Sri Lanka - beautiful, standing tall and providing shade from the tropical heat. Café Kumbuk offers affordable, easy-going food to a small crowd of 30, with a focus on using locally sourced produce and crafting recipes that are geared towards healthy living.
Café Kumbuk operates on three main principles. Firstly, our affordability should be stressed. Secondly, the food has to be fresh, healthy and authentic, so we have made a commitment of sourcing fresh ingredients from local suppliers and saying no to the bad stuff including refined white sugar and artificial flavour enhancers. Lastly, we have invested heavily in making sure that every guest has the best customer experience when choosing to dine with us.
Aside from the food and customer service, interior design plays an important role at Café Kumbuk. Inspired by Sri Lankan design aesthetic and the colonial style house in which we occupy, we decorated our space with rustic wooden tables, palms and succulents, maps and photographs of Sri Lanka, vintage light fittings and a counter with an outer panel made of our namesake wood, Kumbuk. The result was an inviting ambiance full of culture and home like spirit.
Just over a year in operation, we have had an absolute blast, meeting old friends, making new ones and delivering wholesome food and great customer service! We have been blessed with opening a second, smaller outlet not far from our flagship café.
The history of our café does not end here. The road ahead is full of challenges and opportunities, but for sure none will be possible without our beloved customers. Thank you very much for choosing us and we always look forward to greeting you in person at both Café Kumbuk and Kumbuk Kitchen.

OUR LIL' SISTER AT GOODMARKET
Kumbuk Kitchen is our recently opened, smaller outlet – located at 14 Reid Avenue, inside the Good Market shop. It serves up a predominantly vegan and vegetarian menu, with a focus on locally sourced produce – much like that of our flagship Café Kumbuk.
The Good Market is based on the idea that we create the world we live in. We make decisions every day that affect our health, our loved ones, our community, and our environment. If we stop and think about the consequences of our actions, we have the opportunity to make better choices and create a better world. The Good Market wants to make it easier and more fun to “do good” and make better choices for our planet, our communities, and our health. It is a platform where socially and environmentally responsible producers, services providers, and consumers can come together.
Sri Lanka has many organic farmers, social enterprises, and responsible businesses that are creating products and services that are eco-friendly, socially responsible, and healthy. It also has many well-educated consumers that want to feed their families natural and organic food and choose products and services that match their values. The Good Market is a place for these groups to meet.
As well as having a weekly market they also have a store, which allows vendors to sell their Good Market approved wares all throughout the week! We’ve been part of the Good Market community for almost two years now and it made absolute sense for us to open our second outlet within their space.
Do come check us out! For more information on Good Market head to www.goodmarket.lk
